I Will Come with You on Halloween

In home school, our son, Ronan, has been studying song lyrics, poetry, and Dr. Seuss for patterns and repetition in language. In honor of Dr. Seuss’ bet to write Green Eggs and Ham using only 50 words, Ronan and Crystal set out to write a children’s story of their own in 50 words. We didn’t make the 50, but we made it in 60!

We hope you enjoy this clever story just in time for Halloween. We think it will make you smile–and it’s only 60 words!

I Will Come with You on Halloween

It was Halloween night. I was going trick or treating with my friends, Whimper, Whomper, Scott, and Not.

Whimper, Whomper, Scott, Not, and I walked to a house. We rang the doorbell and said, Trick or Treat!

Out popped a ghost!

The ghost asked, Whoooo are you?

I answered proudly, I am I.

Hmm, said the ghost. I will come with you on Halloween.

So Whimper, Whomper, Scott, Not, a ghost, and I walked through the Halloween night.

We walked to the next house. We rang the doorbell and said, Trick or Treat!

Out popped a skeleton!

The skeleton asked, Who are you? [Rattle. Rattle.]

I answered proudly, I am I.

Hmm, said the skeleton. [Rattle. Rattle.] I will come with you on Halloween. [Rattle.]

So Whimper, Whomper, Scott, Not, a ghost, a skeleton, and I walked through the Halloween night.

We walked to the next house. We rang the doorbell and said, Trick or Treat!

Out popped a black cat!

The black cat said, Hiss! Who are you? Hiss!

I answered proudly, I am I.

Hmm. Hiss, said the cat. I will come with you on Halloween. Hiss!

So Whimper, Whomper, Scott, Not, a ghost, a skeleton, a black cat, and I walked through the Halloween night.

We walked to the next house. We rang the doorbell and said, Trick or Treat!

Out popped a pumpkin!

I am Mr. Pumpkin. [Candy. Candy.] Who are you? asked the pumpkin.

I answered proudly, I am I.

Hmm, said Mr. Pumpkin. [Candy. Candy.] Where is your candy?

Whimper, Whomper, Scott, Not, a ghost, a skeleton, and a black cat looked at me and asked, No candy?

Let’s try the next house, I said proudly.

Mr. Pumpkin said, I will come with you on Halloween and help you get candy. [Candy. Candy.]

So Whimper, Whomper, Scott, Not, a ghost, a skeleton, a black cat, Mr. Pumpkin, and I walked through the Halloween night.

We walked to the next house. We rang the doorbell and said, Trick or Treat!

Out popped CANDY!!!!
